The international collaboration, known as the Dark Energy Survey (DES), will present its preliminary findings on Tuesday at a meeting of the American Physical Society and publish them on the Arxiv preprint server.
The survey involves more than 300 scientists from six countries and uses images taken by one of the best digital cameras in the world: a 570-megapixel gadget mounted on the Victor Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, high in the Chilean Andes.
Incredible detail is required to detect dark matter, based purely on the way it warps the light from very distant galaxies.

The theft was carried out by EBank's chief executive, a player known as Ricdic, now known to be a 27-year-old Australian who works in the technology industry. His full identity has not been revealed save that his first name is Richard.

"Basically this character was one of the people who had been running EBank for a while. He took a bunch of (virtual) money out of the bank, and traded it away for real money," Ned Coker, of Icelandic company CCP which runs Eve, told the Reuters news agency.
Eve Online has about 300,000 players all of whom inhabit the same online universe. The game revolves around trade, mining asteroids and the efforts of different player-controlled corporations to take control of swathes of virtual space.
It has now emerged that Ricdic used the cash to put down a deposit on a house and to pay medical bills.
"I'm not proud of it at all, that's why I didn't brag about it," Ricdic told Reuters. "But you know, if I had to do it again, I probably would've chosen the same path based on the same situation."nicloseçš„åšå®¢
Ricdic has now been thrown out of the game as trading in-game cash for real money is against Eve Online's terms and conditions.

Moscow's chemical factories.
The source of the gas is unclear - no accidents have been reported at any of Moscow's chemical factoriesreneex .
Media reports said that the gas was hydrogen sulphide, which can be highly toxic and smells like rotten eggs.
It has been smelt in central, eastern and south-eastern parts of the cityreenex hong kong.
The gas was also detected in the capital's main shopping areas and around the parliament building, reports said.
Russia's emergencies ministry blamed the problem on a failure at a Moscow oil refinery, Interfax reported. However, the refinery's owner Gazprom Neft said there had been no accident and the levels of hydrogen sulphide at the plant were not excessive.
An earlier report suggested that the foul-smelling gas was coming from a network of facilities treating urban wastewater.
Natalya Gorelova, a 25-year-old resident of north-west Moscow, told the BBC she first noticed the gas on her way to her work in the south-west of the city during the morning.
"I have smelt the toxic gas all day. I'm at home now and I closed the windows. We are sitting at home, but I have a headache."
Exposure even to low concentrations of hydrogen sulphide can lead to headaches, dizziness and nausea, experts say.

In response to the question "How far have you ever travelled for a meal?†the restaurants worth packing a suitcase for were surprisingly diverse. As expected, a few world-famous eateries popped up in the answers, but just as many travellers mentioned hole-in-the wall spots for comfort food that is impossible to find anywhere else in the world.ç´…è‘¡è„é…’
Here are a few of our favourite spots mentioned and the sometimes staggering distances distances that were traversed to get there.
Three Ways House Hotel, Gloucestershire, England
Distance travelled: 1,172km
Makiko Itoh drove all the way from Zurich to this old-fashioned hotel in southwestern England for its famous Pudding Club. As the name suggests, the meal involves trying seven different types of British-style pudding over the course of the evening.
"Just like Fight Club, the Pudding Club has rules,†Itoh explained. "Only one pudding allowed on the plate at a time. You must clean your plate before going up for seconds. You cannot go up to the Pudding Station out of turn, only when your table is called.â€
After the three-hour affair, diners vote on their favourite pudding, which includes varieties such as sticky toffee, apple, mincemeat and syrup sponge. The UN Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the epidemic.
It is expected to pass a resolution demanding a more forceful international response to the crisis, urging member countries to provide medical staff and field hospitals.

Unfortunately there is little alternative. Public transport is poor and even recent initiatives such as a trans-Jakarta bus lane are inefficient and even contribute to the problem by clogging intersections and reducing road space while moving comparatively small numbers of people.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations by Ukraine and the West that it has been sending troops into Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions to help the rebels, who want to establish an independent state

It said most of the firing was outgoing from the airport, ie from Ukrainian troops. It said the firing had caused some fires in villages nearby but stressed that, although a violation of the ceasefire, the fighting at Donetsk airport was not sufficient to actually make the ceasefire collapse.

It was New Year's Night. An aged man was standing at a window. Mexico has published new sentencing guidelines that will double prison sentences for kidnapping Financial information.
The minimum prison term has risen from 20 to 40 years oddego.
It will apply for all abductions, including those that last only a few hours or days, so-called "express kidnappings nevergrow".

In reality, few people ever receive sentences longer than 60 years for federal crimes, but kidnapping is considered in a separate category.
'Humanitarian emergency'
The number of kidnappings reported to the police has risen dramatically in Mexico in recent years.
In 2007, 438 kidnappings were reported, but the number had risen to almost 1,700 last year.
And the government estimates the number of kidnappings reported to the police could be fewer than 2% of the total.
If that is the case, the real number of abductions could be about 105,000 per year.
Analysts say accurate figures are hard to come by, as many abductions only last for hours or a few days until the victims empty their bank accounts at gunpoint or pay a ransom.
Most are never reported to the authorities for fear of reprisals from the criminal gang which carried out the kidnapping.
In January this year the Mexican government launched a nationwide effort to fight kidnapping.
A federal prosecutor, Renato Sales, was named to head an anti-kidnapping committee that would co-ordinate efforts to fight abductions in the 10 Mexican states (out of 31) where 74% of all kidnappings take place.
"Mexico needs to deal quickly and efficiently with the humanitarian emergency that this crime entails," said Mr Sales at the time.
